Steeplejack Services

A steeplejack is a skilled tradesperson who specializes in working at heights to repair, construct, or maintain tall structures. Traditionally, this was church steeples and chimneys but in today’s industry, steeplejack work on a wide range of high-rise buildings, from industrial chimneys to modern skyscrapers – and in PTSG’s case, even the iconic Grade I listed Blackpool Tower.

What singles PTSG out as the industry leaders is our ability to employ innovation to solve height-related building access problems for customers in all sectors. This led to the development of PTSG’s unique and award-winning Lateral Access System.

Steeplejacks are involved in maintaining and repairing the structural integrity of tall buildings and structures. This may include fixing masonry, replacing or repairing roofing or structural materials, and addressing issues with lightning protection systems. As the primary focus of a steeplejack’s work is at significant heights, this requires specialised skills, safety training and invariably the use of safety equipment such as harnesses and ropes.

Chimney work is a common task for steeplejacks. They may repair, repoint, or rebuild chimneys, as well as install or repair flues and liners. Steeplejacks also routinely participate in restoration projects for historic buildings and structures. This can involve preserving architectural features, replacing deteriorated materials and ensuring the longevity of the structure.

Rope access techniques used by steeplejacks for ascending and descending tall structures. This involves specialised rigging, harnesses, and other safety equipment to navigate vertical surfaces safely. Due to the inherent risks associated with working at heights, steeplejacks undergo extensive safety training in the use of safety equipment and techniques to minimize the risk of falls or accidents.

Some steeplejacks, including those within PTSG, have skills in welding and metal fabrication, as structural repairs often require these capabilities. Depending on the region, steeplejacks may need certifications or qualifications to ensure they meet safety standards and regulations.

Steeplejacks may collaborate with other construction trades, such as masons, roofers, or metalworkers, to complete comprehensive building or structure maintenance and restoration projects.
