Retail is a diverse and dynamic sector. Despite the challenge in recent years from the rise of online shopping, there has been a partial reinvention of the physical retail space within the UK’s high streets and shopping centres.
This sector encompasses a wide range of businesses from small independent shops to large national and multi-national retailers and supermarkets. Many physical stores also sell their products and services online too – using a hybrid business model.
The retail sector, perhaps more than any other, is influenced by economic conditions, consumer preferences and technological advancements.
Large retail centres are often located in major cities or urban areas. They offer a comprehensive retail experience with a mix of high-street and luxury brands, department stores and leisure facilities. Super-regional shopping centres are less common – they attract visitors from a wider geographical area and often include additional features like entertainment complexes and dining halls.
The top four companies continue to dominate the supermarket sector: Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons. All operate a mixture of hypermarkets, supermarkets and express stores. The former are usually situated away from town centres and can often be found on retail parks. The latter are usually in city and town centres.
Smaller shopping centres in local communities are more likely to feature grocery stores, convenience retailers and essential services.
In the UK, it is estimated that there are around or slightly over 3,000 shopping centres. PTSG has always been extremely active in this area, delivering specialist services from throughout its different independent business divisions.
