Premier Technical Services Group Ltd (PTSG), via component company NSS Group (NSS), is implementing a new initiative to securely and sustainably dispose of old uniform and PPE including safety helmets, boots and lanyards.
Working with new partner, Avena, NSS can recycle old uniform to produce one of the following outputs:
- Recycled yarn/threads to make new clothing
- Recycled into insulation materials for walls, partition and other construction requirements
- Burned to produce energy
The textile industry is one of the highest contributors to carbon emissions and from this production, 350,000 tonnes of textiles are sent to landfill each year in the UK. As a significant employer and provider of specialist services to the FM and construction sectors, PTSG and NSS can reduce their own impact on this by taking positive steps in recycling and re-use of our resources. The aim is to do everything possible to contribute to a more sustainable environment.
With NSS improving disposal methods for uniform and PPE, employees will be more likely to request a new uniform as it deteriorates through their day-to-day activities, meaning they will feel more comfortable at work, safe in the knowledge old uniform will be disposed of ethically.
Textile disposal bags will be issued to all current employees (who can use them immediately, or keep them safe to start filling up). Disposal bins will be implemented at NSS Group’s Manchester and Slough depots. If the scheme is successful, it will be expanded.
