Premier Technical Services Group Ltd (PTSG) has successfully handed over a residential sprinkler system at the Springside development by Moda Living.
Located at Fountainbridge in Edinburgh, Scotland’s first Moda Living development is a £215m residential block of 276 apartments. It was built on the former Fountainbridge brewery and includes a cinema, private dining room, communal lounges and spaces to work from home.
Just prior to the hand over, there was a case of arson in one of the apartments that was nearly completed – someone entered the site and set fire to the dust sheets covering the carpet. The sprinkler system activated a single sprinkler, which not only suppressed the fire but extinguished it. Other than making the carpet wet, the apartment was wholly intact; this saved a lot of time and anguish for the developer.
The automatic fire sprinkler system is the most widely used fire protection system today and has been used since 1872. These systems are designed to protect property and life as specified by the various automatic fire sprinkler standards. Fire sprinklers are now widely used as part of the fire strategy in new-build homes and some building regulations require them to be fitted during building renovations.
