PTSG is the UK’s leading provider of electrical compliance services as well as lightning and surge protection services and power earthing solutions.

Recently, an electrical inspector from PTSG Electrical Services Ltd spotted thermal damage to a sub-main cable within an LV (low voltage) switch panel. Had this not been spotted, the client could have been at serious risk of a fire breaking out.

It appears the original installers used an improper cable crimp which was too big, resulting in arcing and overheating under load.

There are several BS7671 regulations that can be attributed to this issue, especially under Part 5 “Selection & Erection of Equipment”, but the one we are putting in the spotlight is 134.1.1 “Good workmanship by one or more skilled or instructed persons and proper materials shall be used in the erection of the electrical installation”.

The client was made aware of this defect and it was quickly rectified. Would this have been spotted in your routine inspection and testing?

PTSG covers the whole of the UK and we are always expanding to meet our clients’ expectations and requirements.
