Electrical Installation Condition Reporting (EICR)

An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR), also known as a Periodic Inspection Report (PIR) or Fixed Wiring Testing, is a comprehensive assessment of the safety and condition of the electrical installation within a building. This process involves inspecting and testing various components of the electrical system to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations.

The primary purpose of an EICR or Fixed Wiring Testing is to evaluate the safety and condition of the electrical installation in a building. It aims to identify any potential hazards, faults or non-compliance with electrical regulations.

The frequency of testing depends on factors such as the type of installation, its usage, and local regulations. Typically, testing is recommended every one to five years.

The process begins with a visual inspection of the electrical installation. This includes assessing the condition of components such as switches, sockets, distribution boards, wiring, and other electrical accessories.

Various electrical tests are performed to assess the integrity and safety of the installation. Common tests include:

  • Continuity testing: Ensures that electrical connections are sound.
  • Insulation resistance testing: Measures the resistance of insulation materials.
  • Earth loop impedance testing: Checks the effectiveness of earthing.
  • Polarity checks: Verifies the correct connection of live and neutral conductors.

The inspection and testing process aims to identify any faults, potential hazards, or non-compliance with safety standards. Issues identified during the inspection are typically classified with codes indicating the severity and urgency of remedial action needed. Common codes include C1 (danger present), C2 (potentially dangerous), and C3 (improvement recommended).

The EICR report may include recommendations for remedial actions, repairs, or improvements needed to bring the electrical installation into compliance with regulations and ensure safety.

Upon successful completion of the inspection and any necessary remedial work, a certificate or report is issued. This document confirms the safety of the electrical installation and compliance with relevant standards.

It is important to maintain detailed records of all EICR reports, including the date of testing, findings, recommendations, and any remedial actions taken.

The EICR process should adhere to local electrical regulations and standards applicable in the region where the building is located. Any issues identified during the EICR should be addressed promptly through remedial actions to enhance the safety of the electrical installation.

Qualified and competent electricians or electrical engineers should always conduct EICRs or Fixed Wiring Testing. PTSG is at the head of the UK market as the go-to name for electrical compliance. We are experts in the inspection and testing of fixed installations and portable appliances (PAT).
