Construction and Development

Overall, construction and development in the UK is experiencing a period of recovery and growth despite significant challenges in the form of rising costs, driven by inflation and geopolitical uncertainties and skills shortages. It is estimated some 600,000 workers are needed to meet project demands, with civil engineers in particular demand.

The industry is increasingly adopting digital technologies, including construction management software and cloud-based tools, to enhance efficiency and project management. Investment in these technologies is seen as crucial for improving productivity and profitability.

There is a strong focus on decarbonisation and sustainability, with many construction firms prioritising low-carbon technologies and practices. However, the industry faces challenges in implementing these changes effectively due to the complexity of regulations and the need for more guidance.

In terms of the labour market and diversity, there is a growing number of women and neurodivergent individuals entering the construction workforce, which is helping to address the labour shortage. This shift is seen as positive for the industry’s future.
