The Royal Academy of Arts is an art institution based in Burlington House on London’s Piccadilly. Founded in 1768, it has a unique position as an independent, privately funded institution led by eminent artists and architects.
In 2018, the Academy unveiled the results of a major refurbishment for its 250th anniversary. The project began on 1st January 2008 with the appointment of David Chipperfield Architects. In 2012, the Heritage Lottery Fund secured support. On 19th October 2016, the RA’s Burlington Gardens site closed to the public, and renovations commenced. Refurbishment work included the restoration of 150 sash windows, glazing upgrades to 52 windows and the installation of two large roof lights. The public had access to the “New RA” when it opened on 19th May 2018. The £56 million development includes new galleries, a lecture theatre and a public project space for students. Other features included are a bridge linking the Burlington House and Burlington Gardens sites.
The institution has contracted PTSG to deliver a new lightning protection system. The installation will offer a firm defence against electrical storms for the structure and all users.
In addition, PTSG will also deliver testing, inspection and maintenance services for existing lightning and surge protection systems. This also include a full range of services for specialist earthing systems.
PTSG’s engineers, with extensive experience in working on historically significant buildings, can design and install new systems that seamlessly blend with the original façade.
