Fire Curtains and Cavity Barriers

Part of: Passive Fire Services

Fire Curtains

Fire curtains are designed to contain fire and smoke spreading throughout a building. They help compartmentalise fire risks, ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

Fire curtains are fire-resistant fabric barriers that automatically deploy during a fire to seal openings and stop fire and smoke from spreading. They are typically made from fire-rated fiberglass with a steel framework and are stored in a compact headbox when not in use.

PTSG’s installs smoke curtains in a range of settings including open-plan buildings, to separate compartments; shopping centres, atriums and lobbies; lift shafts and stairwells; and industrial facilities and warehouses.

Cavity Barriers

Cavity barriers are fire-stopping materials used to block fire and smoke from spreading through hidden cavities in walls, floors, ceilings, and facades. They are crucial in high-rise and commercial buildings where fire can spread unnoticed through air gaps.

There are several different types  of cavity barriers:

  • Vertical Cavity Barriers – Installed inside walls to stop vertical fire spread
  • Horizontal Cavity Barriers – Used in ceiling voids and roof spaces
  • Ventilated Cavity Barriers – Allow airflow in normal conditions but seal shut in a fire

When installing cavity barriers for customers, PTSG specialists seal concealed voids where fire could travel, preventing the spread of hidden fires. They also ensure regulatory compliance (meeting BS 476 Parts 20 and 22 and EN 1366-4 standards).
